Título

STUDY OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN PECTUS EXCAVATUM AND RESPIRATORY FUNCTION IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING NUSS SURGERY

Objetivo

To investigate whether there is improvement in lung function in patients undergoing Nuss surgery.

Método

The PUBMED database was used for a literature review, with the following descriptors: "Pectus excavatum"; "Nuss procedure"; "Pulmonary function testing". Eleven articles were selected, including randomized controlled clinical trials, prospective and retrospective cohorts published in the last 10 years. Articles unrelated to the topic and those with low scientific evidence were excluded, resulting in nine articles.

Resultados

Most studies show that patients undergoing the Nuss procedure have aesthetic benefits and improved postoperative respiratory performance. However, we can also verify other studies that demonstrate a worsening in patients with asymmetric morphology or that do not show detectable effects with postoperative clinical repercussions.

Conclusões

Since it is still a recent method, there are not enough studies to identify a real benefit in terms of improving lung function after surgery.
