Título

URINARY BIOMARKERS OF RENAL CHANGES IN PREECLAMPSIA: AN UP TO DATE

Introdução

Preeclampsia (PE) is a highly relevant pregnancy-related disorder. An early and accurate diagnosis is very important to prevent major maternal and neonatal morbimortality events. Due to their known association with the pathophysiology of the disease, urine samples have the potential to provide biomarkers for PE prediction, being minimally invasive and easy to perform. Therefore, the search for novel urinary biomarkers may improve outcomes for pregnant women and their babies. This narrative review aimed to summarize the literature about traditional and novel urinary biomarkers in PE and investigate their applicability to screen and diagnose the disorder.

Material e Método

A non-systematic search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and SciELO databases.

Resultados

Concerning the traditionally used serum markers, creatinine, cystatin C and albumin, there is a lot of divergence in the literature regarding their accuracy in PE prediction. As for the new renal biomarkers, including vascular epithelial growth factor, placental growth factor, and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase, although promising, most studies have not concluded on their real applicability for PE prediction.

Discussão e Conclusões

PE is still a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Urine samples have the potential to provide biomarkers for PE due to their known association with the pathophysiology of the disease. In addition, urine sampling is non-invasive and easy to obtain, and its less cost to the health systems would be very useful, mainly to the developing countries. However, studies on urinary markers in pregnancy are scarce and there are still many divergences in the literature regarding their effectiveness for PE prediction. In this way, future and more conclusive research are indispensable to confirm the predictive role of renal markers in pregnant women with PE.
